gardenJoin the Matthews Community Garden

It used to be if your yard wasn’t big enough to have a garden, you were out of luck. Today, residents of Matthews and the surrounding areas can participate in a community garden at 427 Covenant Church Lane. You can grow both flowers and vegetables on a plot of land reserved for you.

Participants get a garden plot that is 8 foot by 6 foot. The plot costs $35 per year – with $20 covering the plot rental and $15 covering water.

If you would like to leave tools in the community chest, you can do so for $2 per year rent for the space. Tools in the chest are considered available for all gardeners to use, so only leave tools you do not mind sharing with other gardeners.

How to Apply for a Plot

The garden is often at full capacity, but applications are taken year round from interested families. You can fill out an application and submit it to the Matthews Community Garden via email. All interested families filling out an application are placed on a waiting list if there are no available plots. Residents of Matthews are given first priority when spots become available.

Download an application here.

Current garden plot holders are set for renewal in December and January each year. If families decide not to renew their garden plot, those spaces are then assigned to people on the waiting list.

Benefits of Community Gardens

There is a multitude of benefits for community gardening, beyond the obvious benefit of growing your own vegetables and enjoying your harvest! Community gardens foster a sense of ownership and development of the community’s identity and spirit. When people garden together from a variety of backgrounds (age, culture, race, social class, etc), people are brought together in ways they would not have before.  A community garden gives people a chance to meet neighbors, which lowers crime rates, and allows for easier community organizing.
