4 Car Repair Tasks to Leave to the Professionals at Scott Clarks ToyotaWhile there are some basic automotive maintenance tasks that aren’t too complicated, some are definitely best left in the hands of professional mechanics. When your car comes due for any of these maintenance services, bring it in to us at Scott Clarks Toyota.

1. Replacing Spark Plugs

The spark plugs in your vehicle play an important role in how your engine functions, so it’s crucial to make sure they’re in good working order. Replacing them might sound straightforward, but a lot of auto manufacturers place the spark plugs deep inside the engine, making them hard to reach without proper equipment.

It’s never a good idea to start taking apart your engine, especially if you aren’t an expert when it comes to putting it back together. Copper plugs typically last for about 30,000 miles, while those made of iridium can last for up to 100,000 miles.

2. Replacing the Windshield

We’ve all been stuck behind a big truck that’s kicking up gravel and rocks, and the outcome is often a crack or chip in the windshield. Some chips are repairable, but if you have a crack that’s bigger than a dollar bill, you’ll need a new windshield before the car can pass a safety inspection. However, handling a massive and heavy piece of glass isn’t a smart idea.

Not only do you have to remove the old windshield and get the new one in there properly, but you also have to use heavy-duty adhesive that holds it firmly in place. If the windshield slips while you’re gluing it, you’ll get a lot of wind, rain, sleet, and snow in your face when you drive. Getting a new windshield installed isn’t too expensive, so leave this task to someone with experience.

3. Recharging the AC

The air conditioning system in your car includes a variety of tubes, components, and containers that hold chemicals and other dangerous substances. Unless you’re pretty familiar with the first law of thermodynamics, you probably should avoid repairing it yourself. When your AC starts blowing hot air, bring it in for a diagnostic checkup. A mechanic can easily determine what is causing the problem and whether your system needs a recharge or repair.

4. Steering Wheel or Dash Panel Work

If anything goes wrong with your steering wheel or the dashboard panels, you should always take your car in for a repair. The air bags behind the panels can come bursting out with a significant amount of force, which can cause serious injury if you’re too close. Additionally, if the air bags do come out as a result of working in the areas where they’re housed, your car is no longer safe to drive. This also applies to anything relating to your gas tank.
