MOOYAH Burgers, Fries & Shakes

MOOYAH has locations throughout the state, and you can find this spot on Matthews Township Parkway. It’s open on weekdays from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays it stays open until 10 p.m. Chefs prepare the burgers with fresh, never frozen beef, and you can choose from more than 25 toppings to customize yours. Even vegetarians or those who don’t eat beef will enjoy MOOYAH, since the menu includes a black bean veggie burger and a turkey burger.

Pair your sandwich with an order of hand-cut French fries and one of the 10 available flavors of milkshakes, made with real ice cream. Kids will love it too, since they can choose from a little burger, grilled cheese sandwich, chicken tenders, or hot dog.

Wayback Burgers Matthews

At Wayback Burgers Matthews, diners can try something out of the ordinary, like the sausage, peppers, and onions burger, with an Italian sausage patty piled high with sweet peppers, onions, and provolone, or stick to the classic double bacon burger. Sample the flavors of Philly with a burger option that includes grilled onions, American cheese, two patties, and sautéed mushrooms, or satisfy some serious hunger with the Triple Triple Burger. This massive entrée includes nine beef patties, nine slices of cheese, lettuce, and tomato.

If you’re not in the mood for a burger, you can also enjoy a chicken or fish sandwich, fresh salad, or a hot dog. The onion rings are mouthwateringly delicious, and the side menu also includes house-made chips, homestyle chili, mac & cheese bites, and Irish nachos. Finish your meal with a hand-dipped milkshake.

Hinson’s Drive-In

More than six decades ago, twin brothers opened a drive-in restaurant called Hinson’s. It’s still a favorite in the Matthews area, serving up tasty menu options like the Fire Burger, piled high with jalapeno peppers and pepperjack cheese, and the German Dog, a sausage link topped with sauerkraut and grilled onions. The house specialties are the pork tenderloin and BBQ sandwiches, with slow-roasted and juicy meats. Don’t forget to try the tater tots, since they’re also a favorite among regulars at Hinson’s.

South 21 Matthews

Another classic location where you can get a tasty burger is South 21 Matthews. It opened in the early 1950s and continues to serve up favorites like the Fish-O-Burger, with filet of trout, tartar sauce, and slaw, served with French fries, and the 21 Xpress Special, which has three beef patties piled with mustard, lettuce, onions, and tomatoes. Before you order from the standard menu, check out the daily special since this part of the menu includes unique and delicious options.

Each of these casual restaurants in Matthews is great for the whole family, and you won’t need a reservation. Some tend to get more crowded at peak mealtimes, so arrive early or be ready to wait a little longer than usual.
