mountain-biking-north-carolinaFor the thrill-seeker, there’s no better outlet than challenging yourself on a steep, curvy mountain biking path. Luckily, North Carolina is full of opportunities for this activity. With the Appalachian Mountains to the west, it provides a great source for some of the most difficult or beginner paths in the region. Here are a few places to head to get some exhilarating exercise and majestic views.

Tsali Recreation Area

Located just outside Bryson City in the far western portion of North Carolina, Tsali Recreation Area is the premier place for mountain biking. It features four tracks that cover over 40 miles of the mountainous region. The slopes are steep and fast, meaning that only an intermediate or experienced biker should tackle them. However, Tsali is widely regarded as one of the top 10 mountain biking destinations in the country. Daily fees to use the trail are just $2.

Big Ivy

Another great destination for the mountain biking enthusiast is Big Ivy. Consider utilizing a larger Toyota vehicle during your drive here, as you’ll find plenty of space for passengers, biking equipment, and other gear. You can find this area within the Pisgah National Forest, and along the way, you’ll discover some unbelievable scenery. Seven trails will lead you through Big Ivy as they pass through rivers, creeks, cliffs, and the picturesque, 70-foot Douglas Falls. If you love a good backcountry jaunt, this is too good a place to pass up.

Dark Mountain/Warrior Creek

This relatively new location is the result of a partnership between a local mountain biking club and the Army Corps of Engineers. The area broke ground in the early 2000s, and today, Dark Mountain has over 20 miles of pristine mountain trails that follow the Blue Ridge. Most of the trails here are easily accessible to amateur riders, as they aren’t particularly steep. Some of the things you’ll see include an old homestead, a rhododendron tunnel, and thick, lush forests.

Richmond Hill Park

Richmond Hill Park is a great place to go mountain biking, while still allowing you to enjoy the city life. Located within the city limits of Asheville, this five-mile trail is open to both mountain bikers and hikers. This trail does have a reputation for many twists and turns, so precision is a key element. You can also stop off at one of the creeks or the French Broad River for a breather, or pack your frisbees for the disc golf course on-site.

DuPont State Forest

Nestled along the southeast edge of the Blue Ridge Mountains, DuPont State Forest is a 10,400-acre area for you to explore at your leisure. This intermediate course offers over 80 miles of trails, making it one of the longest treks in the state. DuPont is also home to an expanse of granite boulders found in few other places in North Carolina. Test your skills on the slickrock track, or tackle something a bit easier. Either way, you’re bound to enjoy your time here.

If you’ve never been mountain biking before or you’re a seasoned veteran, North Carolina’s trails provide some of the top scenery and challenges in the entire country. So, the next time you’re up to the task, pack up the gear and roll out to one of these spots.
