The manufacturer works hard to provide passengers with cars that can help them avoid collisions and keep them safe in the event of one. Here are some of the most innovative safety features on 2017 Toyotas.

1. The Pre-Collision System

Toyota’s Pre-Collision System, or PCS, uses cameras and lasers to detect objects in front of your vehicle. If the system detects there is the possibility of a collision, it will warn the driver by giving them both an audio and a visual alert. The system also includes brake assist, which automatically applies the brakes if it still senses the possibility of a collision even after the driver uses the brakes.

2. Lane Departure Alert

The Lane Departure Alert System helps keep drivers in their lane. If the system senses the vehicle is drifting out of its intended lane, it will alert the driver using both visual and audio signals. When the driver receives the alert, they must use the steering wheel to get back on track. Some vehicles also have a Steering Assist Function that will use a corrective steering input to keep the vehicle from leaving the lane.

3. Pedestrian Detection Function

Some of the vehicles with the Pre-Collision System also have a Pedestrian Detection System. This uses cameras and radar to detect when there is a pedestrian in the path of the vehicle. If it detects a person, it will alert the driver and prompt them to brake or take evasive action. If they don’t apply the brakes, and the system determines there is a high risk of collision, it will automatically slow you down to reduce the impact.

4. Blind Spot Monitoring

The Blind Spot Monitoring System uses radar to scan the blind spots around the vehicle. Cars equipped with this system have small warning signals on the side mirrors to let the driver know when another vehicle is in their blind spot.

5. Vehicle Stability Control

The Vehicle Stability Control System uses a sensor in the steering wheel, along with the ABS wheel-spaced sensors, to collect data. The system makes sure the vehicle follows the steering inputs and stays in the correct direction. If it detects any wheel-slip or reduction in traction, it will automatically reduce the engine power and pulse the brakes on the correct side to help keep the car under control.

6. Automatic High Beams

The Automatic High Beam System helps drivers see what is ahead of them by automatically switching between high and low beams. It uses a camera in the vehicle to detect the headlights of oncoming cars and the taillights of those in front to determine if it needs the high or low beams. This system uses high beams more often than drivers normally do to help them see objects in front of them earlier than they would on their own.
