museumDr. Massey, a local Matthews resident, once built a home that is now the Matthews Heritage Museum. Thanks to a local historian, new documents relating to the Massey Family have been uncovered and are for public display through the month of August.

Recently, 19 new documents have been added to the museum. Descendants of the Massey family have helped to uncover the important additions to the museum. Dr. Massey’s great-great-grandson has signed the documents and believes even more Massey family items were available to be added to the museum.

An approximate 500 documents and artifacts are already on the premises that take a look into the history of the area including medical bottles, letters, and pictures. It was only in 2014 when the museum received the first picture of Dr. Massey and members of his family. Letters that were collected highlight the good and the bad of living in the late 1800’s.

The Massey house was originally built in 1879, the same year the town of Matthews was founded. The Matthews Heritage Museum is open Thursday through Saturdays from 10:00am to 4:30pm. A small admission fee is required while children under 10 are admitted free. The first Saturday of every month offers free admission for everyone.

Whether you are local to the Matthews area or plan to visit, a stop at the Matthews Heritage Museum is a great way to take a glimpse into the past and understand life at the turn of the century.
