One of the most common complaints of parents is that their children don’t listen to them or do what they say.  You may think they’re not paying attention but a number of studies have shown that starting around the age of eight, many children are very aware of their parents driving habits and are even learning habits that will stay with them when they become drivers.  If you want to ensure your children become safe drivers, start setting a good example by being conscious of your own driving habits when you transport your children.  Here are some tips for setting a good example for young drivers from Matthews NC Toyota:

Kids Will Do As You Do

Insurance company studies show that by the age of eight, 80% of children can give details about their parents driving habits.  They know if you drive faster than the speed limit, they know if you use your cell phone and drive at the same time, and they recognize signs of road rage.  If you don’t want your children driving with these habits, you should think about how you drive when they are in the car even if they are years away from becoming drivers themselves.

Drive the Way You Want Your Teenagers to Drive

The best way to alter your driving habits to help set a good example for your children is to drive the way you would want your teenagers to drive.  Wear your seat belt every time you get in the car if that’s what you expect your teen drivers to do.  Put your cell phone away if you don’t want your children talking or texting while driving.
