So the day has come and your child is now a teenager and is ready to drive. As a parent you might be terrified while your son or daughter is probably overly excited and ready to go. To help ease your mind a bit and make the process a tad less stressful, your North Carolina Toyota offers the following helpful tips to get your teen started.

1) Take The Driver Education Course: In North Carolina before your teen can even apply for their learner’s permit (unless they are already 18) they must first complete a driver’s education course. The course consists of thirty hours classroom time and 6 hours behind the wheel.

2) Apply for A Learner’s Permit: The next step is to apply for a learner’s permit. In order to be eligible for a permit you must show proof of completing your driver’s education course and pass the permit test.

3) Get Insurance Coverage: Before hitting the road, you will need to get insurance coverage for your teen. You should be able to add them onto your current policy.

4) Take Your Teen out to Drive: It is now time for you to take your teen out and teach them how to drive. A great place to start is in a large empty parking lot. This will allow them time to practice using the controls and get used to the features of the car without roadway distractions. You should have them drive around and have them test the acceleration, test the brakes, use the turn signals, turn on the lights, wipers and test any other controls.

5) Consider a used Toyota purchase: Once your teenager is driving and ready for their license it may be time to consider getting them their own car. Your local used Toyota dealership is ready to help you find an affordable and safe used Toyota for your teen to drive.
