Most drivers are aware of their oil and transmission fluid, but there is another fluid you may not think about very much.  Your vehicle also has brake fluid, and it is supposed to be replaced every two years or so, depending on how you drive your car.  If you’re unsure if your car needs new brake fluid, make an appointment with our North Carolina Toyota service center and we can give your vehicle a tune up and change brake fluid if necessary.

What Does Brake Fluid Do?

Brake fluid is what provides the force required to squeeze the brakes against the wheels and bring your car to a stop.  Brake fluid circulates within your brake system through tubes and metal lines, and supplies pressure when the driver pushes the brake pedal.

Problems with Brake Fluid

Severe temperatures in either direction can cause problems with the consistency of your car’s brake fluid.  If it’s too hot, the fluid will vaporize and get absorbed into the hydraulic system.  Fluid in a vapor state may be too thin to provide the necessary pressure to the brake shoes and your car may not stop as well as it should.  When the temperatures drop below freezing, brake fluid is at risk to freezing if it is not the right consistency.  Brake fluid that is contaminated and of incorrect consistency can lead to expensive mechanical problems, such as needing to replace your entire brake system.
