Proactive tire maintenance is the key to keeping a smooth and comfortable ride in your Toyota while also ensuring the safety of you, your passengers, and everyone on the roads around you.  Improperly maintained tires are among the leading causes of car accidents in the country.  Matthews Toyota offers the following tips for preventing disasters caused by tire problems:

Check Tire Pressure Regularly

When you drive with under-inflated tires, you risk the chance of your tires collapsing while driving, and when you travel with over-inflated tires you risk the chance of your tires blowing out while you drive.   There is a label on your tires that indicates what PSI (pounds per square inch) is recommended for your tires.  Use a tire pressure gauge to check that your tires are properly inflated, and add or release air until your tires are at the correct PSI.  For best results, check tire pressure at least once a month.

Keep an Eye on Your Tire Tread

Tires can typically last up to 50,000 miles if they are well cared for and rotated regularly.  If you aren’t sure how to check the level of tread, stick a penny into the tread of a tire.  If you can see Lincoln’s head, it’s time to schedule a Matthews Toyota service appointment for new tires.

Visual Inspection of Tire Condition

It’s a good idea to get into the habit of visually checking your tires before you drive your car.  Take a walk around your vehicle to see if there are any objects stuck in your tire – things like rocks, nails or glass can get stuck inside your tire and cause the air to leak out.  If you see any objects stuck in your tire, you can either try to patch it yourself or bring the vehicle into our North Carolina service department for repair.
